Societies

Healthier Societies

The great majority of health and wellbeing is created and sustained outside of healthcare and treatment settings – in the environments in which people live, work, play and travel.

The Healthier Societies Program aims to support governments, markets and communities to establish, deliver and sustain conditions to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of people, planet and economies – to fix systems, not people.

We do research on policies, laws and other interventions that can have the greatest impact on population-level health equity outcomes, and that address the social and structural determinants of health, including through rights-based approaches (e.g., the food environment, transport, gender, and socioeconomic and environmental drivers of health).

Our solutions

healthcare

We are working in many countries to equitably improve the health and wellbeing of populations worldwide. We are developing and co-creating innovative, cutting-edge research, evaluation, policies, advocacy and knowledge to increase the positive impact of:

  • Governments through research that supports evidence-informed, equity-focussed, rights-based policymaking, and regulation.
  • The commercial sector that has an influence on health, such as through the food supply, transport and delivery of health care and treatment, or healthcare products.
  • Communities, including Tribal / First Nations groups, in harnessing internal resources and mobilising to improve local, regional, and global health and wellbeing outcomes.

The Healthier Societies program builds on existing work across Food Policy, Injury Prevention, and Mental Health, for example, and is expanding into new areas of focus:

Our strategy

Our mission is to improve the lives of millions of people through better treatments, better care, and healthier societies. Through a program of research, advocacy/thought leadership, and disruptive social entrepreneurship, we are driving global impact.
