Parisa Glass: International Women's Day 2019 Profile

Parisa Glass has worked in research operations and business for over 15 years. She joined The George Institute for Global Health 10 years ago after completing her PhD in biomedical sciences.

Parisa found herself drawn to the operational and business side of research after accepting a role that involved overseeing the research activity across a hospital.

“That’s where my journey in management and leadership started. I have always worked in the health and research sectors. I am passionate about health and feel that although I don’t do independent research I am still contributing to this field. A small but productive piece of the puzzle to improve the health of people.”

Parisa hopes that her efforts and successes will help other women find success in management roles, regardless of which sector they work in.

“I really want to contribute to helping create a pathway for other women looking to succeed in business and leadership. I hope to show other women that leadership is about caring for people, no matter what tough decisions you need to make.”

“Always start with compassion.”

Parisa advises other women seeking a career in research to be bold and trust in themselves.

“Take risks and do not be afraid of failure. If you are passionate about something, then go for it.”

She would like to see more opportunities and support given to junior women researchers and for them to be given the chance to learn about management and business. More broadly speaking, Parisa sees education as the key to a more equitable society.

“I think the only way to achieve gender balance in this world is to have free and mandatory universal education across the world. I think the world needs to invest a lot more into education of girls, as well as boys. This is the only way we can reach our full potential as humans.”

“After all, a bird cannot fly when one wing is weaker than the other.”

In terms of this year’s International Women’s Day theme, #Balanceforbetter, Parisa sees the foundations of personal stability coming from within.

“Balance to me means having a mind that is rich in knowledge and heart full of love. We need knowledge as well as love if we are to tackle all our problems.”
