Dr G Gururaj has worked for nearly three decades in the area of injury prevention and safety promotion in India and other less resourced settings of South East Asia, the Pacific and Eastern Mediterranean Region. His focus has been on prevention, strengthening trauma care and rehabilitation of persons with road traffic injuries, burns, drowning, falls, and suicide.

In all these areas, Gururaj's work has a strong thrust on epidemiological and public health research, capacity strengthening and training, facilitating relevant policies and programmes. as well as conducting advocacy and awareness programmes. His past research has dealt with developing a strong evidence basis for developing sustainable and cost effective interventions and implementation–integration through programmes and policies in different settings by working closely with different stakeholders. With a strong background in epidemiology and public health, monitoring the progress and evaluation of the impact has been his thrust areas of work. 

Gururaj if the Former Director and Senior Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health at the National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (An Institute of National Importance which hosts the WHO CC for Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion and the Centre for Public Health) and has worked for the National Governments and Ministries of Health in several countries during his illustrious career. He has worked with the World Health Organization (HQ, Regional Offices and country offices), UNICEF, World Bank, and other organisations, supporting their work in road safety, child safety, trauma care strengthening and other areas. He was also the Chairman of the Karnataka Health vision group 2021–22.

Gururaj obtained his MD in public health and is a trained epidemiologist. He obtained additional training in road safety, public health and epidemiology during his career. He now works as a practitioner and as an advisor and consultant to many organisations in India and other countries.
