Dr Cara Tannenbaum is a Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Montreal and a former Scientific Director of the Canadian Institute of Health Research-Institute of Gender and Health. From 2019-2024 she served as the Departmental Science Advisor to Health Canada. Dr. Tannenbaum was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada in recognition for her work in drug safety, women’s health and sex and gender science. Cara has led several initiatives to integrate sex, gender and intersecting factors across health and allied areas including the sex-and-gender-based-analysis plus (SGBA+) policy in Canada, and has previously advised the European Commission, the U.S. National Institutes of Health, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on similar policy implementation.
Cara is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the May Cohen Gender Equity Award from the Association of Faculties of Medicine Canada and the Betty Havens Prize for Knowledge Translation in Aging.
Cara works with researchers, governments, universities and stakeholders interested in gender, sex and health research to set priorities, identify implementation opportunities, build partnerships and translate research evidence to improve the health of all.
