The Better Treatments strategic priority area is focused on identifying better treatments or novel interventions for people with a broad range of non-communicable health conditions including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and cancer. This involves research within Australia and internationally, with a focus on low and middle income countries. The Cardiovascular Division is focused on improving the cardiometabolic health of people internationally, with a focus on equity.

The Senior Research Fellow will be responsible for overseeing and developing a range of research projects within the related program of work with a specific focus on endocrinology- diabetes, gestational diabetes, obesity and metabolic health. The Senior Research Fellow will assume a leadership role, while supporting the Program Head or Director and will be expected to function increasingly independently.

Duties and Key Responsibilities

• Developing an array of projects as part of a larger business plan or working on one plan in a specialist capacity with longer timeframes
• Provide leadership, advice and support in projects, and exercise autonomy in relation to techniques, methods and procedures to achieve desired outcomes
• Provide high level oversight and contribution to all research activities
• Lead grant writing and revenue raising for the development of new projects
• Directly write and guide others in development of reports on analyses that are suitable for publication in high impact journals
• Foster strategic research collaborations with other researchers on projects both within and external to The Institute
• Develop and maintain national and international [clinical] links to support the Program’s activities
• Attend regular meetings of established projects
• Contribute to proposal and budget development
• Ensure that research being conducted is congruent with world best practice
• Remain abreast of developments in the related program that are relevant to the study and The Institute; providing a source of information to colleagues within the Institute.
• Actively develop and promote the desired culture of The Institute by ensuring all interactions, documentation and communication are conducted in a manner which supports the stated mission
• Contribute to teaching activities within The Institute and at the University of New South Wales and supervise students in medical and public health courses.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Essential

• PhD in a relevant health related discipline
• Clinical academic in the field of endocrinology
• Seasoned Researcher or Leader of a small research theme within a program
• Experience in the management of research projects and/or clinical trials
• Demonstrated track record in application and procurement of grants and funds
• Experienced in writing high impact research papers
• Advanced technical writing and oral presentation skills
• Experience in people management and primary supervisor of post-graduate students
• Developed decision making, problem solving, analytical skills, and strategic thinking
• Demonstrated leadership and mentoring skills
• Experience with budget proposals and development
• Proficient in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well and flexibly i.e. autonomously, in small teams and with a wide range of varying stakeholders
• Ability to see the big picture, yet still focus on detail
• Availability and willingness to travel
