Assessing the cluster headache research gaps based on the patients’ perspectives

Researchers at The University of New South Wales (UNSW) are conducting a survey to collect patients' opinions regarding future research directions for cluster headache.

About cluster headache
Cluster headache represent a debilitating headache disorder marked by intense, sharp pain typically around one eye, accompanied by symptoms like a runny or blocked nose and a watery eye on the affected side. These headache occur in 'clusters' over weeks or months, with individuals experiencing up to eight attacks daily, each lasting between 15 minutes to 3 hours, before entering a remission period. The disease affects one in every 1,000 people, primarily in their 20s to 40s.

About the study
Current literature and studies suggest that there are only a few available options for treating cluster headache, thus, more treatments need to be researched. This research is essential because it will outline the patients' perspectives on the areas that require additional research and their interest in
participating in clinical trials.

Who Can Participate?
This study is looking for people who want to take part in this survey and who:

  • Live in Australia
  • Are aged 18 years or older
  • Are diagnosed with cluster headache
  • Consent to join the study

Participation in this research is not mandatory, and your decision to or not to take part is optional and voluntary.

Why Participate?
Your involvement is entirely voluntary but immensely valuable. By participating, you contribute to a deeper understanding of cluster headache, potentially influencing future research and treatment approaches.

What Does Participation Involve?
The survey will ask you about your experiences with cluster headaches, your views on current research in the field, and your suggestions for future research directions. It is designed to take approximately 10-15 minutes of your time.

Before you decide to participate, we encourage you to read the attached Participant Information Statement, which provides a thorough overview of the survey, including the nature of the research, what participation involves, potential risks, and any discomfort you may experience as a participant.
