Recurrent headache is a common, disabling condition affecting millions of Australians and 1.4 billion people globally. Headaches are also a leading cause of lost work productivity. Some research suggests blood pressure lowering reduces headache, but there is clinical uncertainty – resolving this would improve treatment of hypertension, migraine and tension headache. Much of the relevant evidence lies ‘hidden’ as secondary outcomes in trials conducted for other reasons. Envisaged phases of research include 1) systematic review of previous trials (anticipated >2,000) 2) clinical trial of blood pressure lowering for headache prevention 3) process and economic evaluations to assess acceptability and cost-effectiveness.
The ideal candidate has a biomedical sciences degree with first class honours or equivalent, familiarity with pharmaceutical studies, literature searching and clinical trials, ability to synthesise information, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
The supervisory team is Dr Anthony Rodgers , The George Institute for Global Health, Dr Emily Atkins, The George Institute for Global Health, and Dr Abdul Salam, The George Institute for Global Health India.
