Preventing and managing chronic and critical conditions

Chronic disease is the leading cause of death and disability in Australia, and over 125,000 people are admitted to intensive care each year. We look for innovative ways to improve the prevention and treatment of these conditions.

  • Feature Project
  • Sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease
  • A China-Australia collaborative, multi-centre program of research to establish the benefits of treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on cardiovascular outcomes. OSA is a very common condition characterised by varying degrees of repetitive episodes of upper airway obstruction (apnea) or narrowing (hypopnea) during sleep, loud snoring, and daytime sleepiness. 10% of middle-aged men and 4% of middle-aged women have significant OSA (ie >15 obstructive events per hour of sleep).
“I commend Dr Stephen MacMahon, the chief investigator of the Action in Diabetes and Vascular Disease (ADVANCE) study, who led the team from 20 countries worldwide in the study which involved 11,140 patients with Type 2 diabetes who were treated and followed up over five years.” Minister for Health and Ageing, The Hon. Nicola Roxon
