Improving food and health policy

Australia now has an incredible public health opportunity to implement population wide food policy to improve the nation’s health. The links between chronic conditions, consumer behaviour and food policy are a focus of the Institute’s work.

  • Putting salt on the agenda in Australia
  • Australian adults eat an average of 9 grams of salt each day - much more salt than the 1 gram or so that we need, and far more than is healthy. AWASH is aiming to reduce salt consumption by Australians to an average of 6 grams each day. See the extensive work of AWASH here.
The Heart Foundation is very supportive of initiatives such as Drop the Salt! which improve public health through changing the food supply in a positive direction and thereby improving the health status of Australians. Heart Foundation
