The George Institute welcomes appointment of Ms Frances Adamson as new DFAT Secretary

Statement issued by Professor Vlado Perkovic, Executive Director, The George Institute Australia

The George Institute for Global Health congratulates Ms Frances Adamson on her appointment as new Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Ms Adamson has substantial experience in our region, a great appreciation of global health priorities, and also of Australia’s rich tradition of health and medicine excellence and innovation. We are looking forward to working with Ms Adamson and DFAT on opportunities for health development, innovation and trade in our region and around the world.

Health and sustainable health systems are a global priority, and the epidemics of chronic disease and injury, including conditions such as diabetes, stroke and heart disease, require sustainable and innovative solutions as well as cross-country collaborations. This is especially true in the Asia-Pacific region where the burden of these conditions is greatest.

Australia has the opportunity to take a leadership role, leveraging its strong ties in the region and health expertise in these important conditions, and have a real lasting impact on social and economic development in the region, and to help improve the health of many millions of people.

Australian’s recent commitment to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals is a welcome initiative and we look forward to understanding further how Australia can contribute to these in the area of health.
