In 1999, with the support of the University of Sydney Medical School, The George Institute was established in Australia with the aim of creating a world-class centre for research in global health. The George Institute, Australia has now grown to comprise hundreds of staff, multiple research divisions, several research centres and a number of strategic enterprises. Australia remains the global headquarters for the Institute.

In 2017, The George Institute, Australia began a new affiliation with UNSW Sydney (The University of New South Wales).
